Anxiety is...?

We all feel anxious from time to time. Anxious feels are a normal and natural part of the human condition. Anxious in the past, if you think about it, is our bodies way of reminding us to pay attention to something in our environment, something that might seem dangerous, something that might seem threatening to something we value. It's reminding us to pay attention...something...

In days gone by, if we were in the jungle, or the prairie's in Africa, it made sense to pay attention to our anxious feelings. In case we were hunted by a lion, or tiger. Or near a swamp in the southern wetlands of America, to be wary of Alligators in the bayous of Louisiana in the United States...it makes sense to be cautious? While some threats are real and present, some are not so likely, and others are just conjured by our conscious mind - our imagination...

It's important to accept the purpose and natural origin of anxious feelings coming from deep within our nervous system. At the same time, it is important to remember what it is there for..to get you to pay attention to what you you want. Do you want safety? Do you want security? Do you want success? Do you want love? Do you want joy? Do you want happiness?

When you feel that anxious feeling, pay attention, and ask your unconscious mind, "What is it, that I should pay attention to, that will allow this anxious feeling, to disappear, easily and effortlessly

What is Hypnosis?

Believe it or not!

All hypnosis is self-hypnosis

You are always in control. You cannot be made to do anything that you do not want to do.

Don’t expect to feel hypontised…

Do Expect to feel relaxed

You can learn how to go into trance, if you are willing, if you want to…

Hypnosis is not...

Hypnosis does not mean you are unconscious, or asleep
It is well documented, there are are number of levels of trance, or hypnosis. Deep trance is appropriate and works for some people. For others, a light trance is all they need. We utilise a combination of NLP and hypnosis, which means we can combine techniques to communicate with the subconscious. Ultimately, all learning and behavioural change happens at the subconscious level.

Hypnosis is not a swinging watch
There is a wide range of techniques available to a well practised hypnotherapist. Hypnosis is ultimately about you and how you (your conscious mind) connects with your subconscious mind. Different techniques and approaches suit different people.

Hypnosis is not a 'do to' process
Don't expect something to be done to you. We work with you.Your commitment to your outcomes and the process are essential. For hypnosis to work, you will be a willing participant in the pre-work, the hypnosis and any post-work assigned by your practitioner.

Hypnosis is not about getting you to do something you don't want to
Again, it is well documented. In a nutshell, you can't be asked to do something in hypnosis that you wouldn't normally do. You can't be made to dance like a chicken, and then forget about it...unless that's what 1. you want, or 2. Normally do 😄.

Now you might have noticed, that some of your friends might like to dance like chickens, and then forget about it? If you have, be sure to invite them along to a stage hypnosis!

What is Hypnosis Really?
The key to success with hypnosis is to understand that we all have an unconscious mind.

‘Your unconscious mind, not only holds information that is outside your consciousness, but it also manages sensations and body functions. A moment before reading this sentence, you probably were not aware of the feeling of your feet against the floor, or your back against the chair. You have sensations coming into your body all of the time, and yet you remain unaware of most of them. In addition to managing all of these sensations, your Unconscious Mind keeps your heart beating, your blood circulating, your digestion working, and your lymph system operating…and even makes your eyes blink without conscious awareness.’

Tad James with Lorraine Flores and Jack Schober, Hypnosis – A Comprehensive Guide: Producing Deep Trance Phenomena

Of key importance in understanding what hypnosis is, is the idea that there is a ‘mind body connection’. Beyond this is the idea that, the body, the unconscious or subconscious mind, is constantly listening to the thoughts of the mind, looking for guidance, looking for direction, even instructions from the conscious mind on what to do. The unconscious mind is to varying degrees in different people ‘suggestible’, waiting, ready to take ‘suggestions’ from the conscious mind, or some other source and put them into action.

So, hypnosis can be considered a question of your willingness, to be receptive and responsive to ideas, and allow these suggestions to act on you without interference. These ideas, we call suggestions (Weitzenhoffer and Hilgard).

Hypnosis is a state of intensified attention and receptiveness to an idea, or set of ideas (Erickson).

Hypnosis is a particular altered state of selective hyper-suggestibility brought about in an individual by the use of a combination of relaxation, fixation of attention and suggestion (Ansari).

Many others have defined hypnosis too, and you get the idea.

Dr A.M. Krasner, an eminent practitioner of hypnosis in the 20th century, defined hypnosis as:

‘…a process which produces relaxation, distraction of the conscious mind, heightened suggestibility and increased awareness, allowing access to the subconscious through the imagination. It also produces the ability to experience thoughts and images as real.’

So demystifying hypnosis a little, it is important that you have a good relationship with your hypnotherapist, and them with you. This is key, as
your hypnotherapist is your guide into your Unconscious, Subconscious Mind. They are essentially guiding you to 'self hypnosis', a place where you are in deep relaxation, inwardly and intensely focussed, and prepared to accept suggestions (unconditionally) at the unconscious or subconscious level.

Ultimately, the responsibility for change is with you. If you want the change, your hypnosis will produce it 🤔
